“The Cost of Counselling: Is It Worth It?” – An Irish Perspective on Investing in Your Mental Health

"Sure isn’t therapy a bit much?"

It's a question I hear regularly. Whether it’s during a casual chat over tea or from someone genuinely trying to weigh up their options, the cost of private counselling can feel like a hurdle — and I understand that.

In an ideal world, access to mental health care would be available to everyone who needs it. But here in Ireland, like many parts of the HSE, we face long waiting lists, underfunded services, and very limited availability unless you’re in acute crisis. For some, private counselling becomes the only real and timely option.

It’s easy to see counselling as something “extra” — especially when we’re already stretched. But here's the thing: investing in your mental health is just as valid and important as investing in your physical health.

We don’t think twice about paying for the gym, fitness classes, a massage, or even getting our hair and nails done. These are all things we do to feel good in ourselves — and rightly so. But how often do we give the same priority to how we’re coping emotionally?

One young client once said to me, “I’d spend more on a weekend out — I just needed to put my priorities in order.” That moment stayed with me. It showed the shift that happens when we begin to truly value our mental health.

Yes, counselling does cost money — and for many, that can be the reason they delay reaching out. But those who do take the step often tell me, “This was the best investment I’ve ever made.”

Not just in terms of getting through a difficult patch, but in how they move forward. How they manage relationships. How they respond to stress. How they treat themselves.

Because therapy doesn’t just support you now — it sets the foundation for how you live your life going forward.

Let’s flip the question: What's the cost of not getting support? Unaddressed mental health struggles can quietly impact your relationships, career, physical health, and quality of life. For some, it can lead to alcohol or substance use, burnout, or even breakdowns in family or work life — all of which carry far greater costs emotionally, mentally, and financially.

Counselling, when the time is right and the fit is good, can offer a safe space to explore, heal, grow, and learn. It’s not just about ‘talking.’ It’s about being heard. It’s about finding your feet again and discovering new ways to cope, connect, and carry on.

That said, private therapy isn’t the only way. There are community supports, charities, low-cost services, and group supports across Ireland doing fantastic work. But if you find a counsellor who suits you and your budget, and you’re ready to invest in yourself, please know: it is never a selfish thing to do.

Your mind matters. Your well-being matters. And you matter — to yourself and to the people around you.

If you’ve been on the fence about counselling, maybe this is your gentle nudge to consider it. That first step is often the hardest — but it could also be the most powerful.
